Housing Tax Credit for New Homebuyers

The new housing credit provides you with a maximum tax credit amount of $8000, or 10% of the purchase price if the home costs less than $80,000.  No repayment is required for the credit as long as you remain in your home for at least three years.  To qualify for the credit, you must be a first time homebuyer. You must also have an adjusted gross income of $75,000 per year or less as an individual, or no more than $150,000 jointly.  This credit is good on homes purchased between January 1, 2009 and November 30, 2009.

You may ask what it means to be a first time homebuyer. This means that you have not owned a residence in your name in the past three years.  Simply put, even if you have owned a home in the past, as long as you have not had your name on a home in the 3 years prior to purchasing your new home, you are considered a first time homebuyer.
